Wisdom teeth Management

Wisdom teeth are otherwise known as the third molars, which usually appear between the ages of 17 and 24, and can create varying degrees of complication or trauma.

Wisdom teeth can sometimes be of little consequence to the individual, however, in others they can be a cause of great pain and discomfort and may need to be extracted if they begin to affect the surrounding teeth and overall composition of the mouth.

Sometimes prone to ‘coming in sideways’ the wisdom tooth may develop at an angle and can push against your other teeth, causing pain and an overcrowding to the overall mouth. In some cases the resulting pressure can cause a shift in the overall tooth structure of the mouth, which can in turn generate further problems. Impacted wisdom teeth, which are not fully emerged, can cause a range of problems, including:

• A trapping and build up of plaque and bacteria
• Development of cysts (fluid- filled sac)
• Development of tumours
• Infection
• Jaw and gum disease
• Intense pain and soreness in the mouth
• Infection in the mouth
• Facial swelling
• Swelling of the gum line in the back of the mouth

In the event of wisdom teeth occurring, it is advisable to seek dental attention in the earliest stages of detection in order to minimise the potential problems.

Once wisdom teeth have developed into a problem extraction is often the best course of action and involves the surgical removal of the tooth.
